Abstract

This study aimed at creating a future vision to enhance the Orientation of graduate students towards conducting education economics research in colleges of education in Saudi universities. Therefore, it sought to identify the reality of teaching the economics of education in colleges of education and to determine the most prominent personal, educational, and (organizational and administrative) factors influencing graduate students’ tendency toward conducting education economics research, from their point of view. Moreover, the study attempted revealing the proposals me for enhancing graduate students’ tendency toward conducting education economics research from the point of view of experts. It adopted both types of the descriptive approach (survey and documentary). It also used the method of Experts’ Symposium for Foresight Studies. Further, a questionnaire was developed as a research tool, while interviews were used as a tool for collecting Experts’ Symposium. The study reached a number of results, including: the topic of education economics, along with all its fields, has not received proper attention with equal proportions in the academic programs of the colleges of education in Saudi universities (i.e. study sample) in general. Furthermore, the study found that the academic programs of some college departments, specializing in education fundamentals and educational management, do not contain courses in the field of economics of education, at all. However, the Department of Educational Management at the College of Education, at Taibah University, was found to be unique in having a master’s-level program in education economics and planning. The study also found that there is a group of (personal) factors affecting graduate students’ tendency towards conducting education economics research with a moderate degree, including: the predominance of the theoretical part when studying education economics courses in college, and fear of poor cooperation with relevant institutions. The study also concluded that graduate students in colleges of education in Saudi universities agreed on the existence of a group of (educational) and administrative factors affecting tendency towards conducting education economics research to a high degree, such as: weak training on the methods used for conducting studies in the field of education economics (the applied aspect); lack of the courses and workshops offered to master the skills of using research methods in the fields of education economics. Finally, the study presented a proposed vision to enhance graduate students’ Orientation towards conducting research in education economics in colleges of education in Saudi universities.
