Independent Living Skills and Its Correlation with Quality of Life among Adolescents with Intellectual Disabilities

Abstract

The current research aimed at examining the association between independent living skills and quality of life among adolescents with intellectual disabilities. It also aimed at identifying the extent to which independent living skills could by predicted by quality of life among participants. The study investigated the differences among adolescents with intellectual disabilities according to gender (male\female). (72) adolescents (males and females) with intellectual disabilities, aged (14-18) years, with IQ (50-70) participated in the study. Raven's Coloured Progressive Matrices test (Translated & standarized by Emad Ahmed Hassan, 2016), Independent living skills for adolescents with intellectual disabilities scale, quality of life for adolescents with intellectual disabilities scale (Prepared by the researcher) were used in the study. The findings revealed that there was a statistically positive significant correlation between independent living skills and quality of life among adolescents with intellectual disabilities. Independent living skills could be predicted by quality of life. The results revealed that there were no statistically significant differences in independent living skills and the quality of life and their components according to the gender variable (males / females), except for the emotional quality of life component in which the differences were in favor of females. The study revealed the importance of independent living skills in preparation for the stage of adulthood, and their impact on the quality of life of intellectually disabled adolescents.
