Character Strengths and Its Correlation with Satisfaction of Life and Depression among Secondary Stage Students: Predictive Study

Abstract

The purpose of the current study was to examine the association between character strengths, satisfaction of life and depression among the secondary stage students. It also aimed to identify the extent to which satisfaction of life and depression in secondary stage could be predicted by character strengths. The study investigated the differences in character strengths, satisfaction of life and depression according to: gender (male-female). The number of participants in the research (120), and they were selected from some secondary schools in Al-gharbia governorate. The participants completed the character’s strengths scale, to satisfaction of life scale, and beck depression inventory (Translation: Ahmad Abdel Khaleq, 2015). The findings revealed that there was a statistically significant correlation between character strengths and satisfaction of life. There also was a statistically positive significant correlation between character strengths and depression in participants. Satisfaction of life and depression could by predicted by character strengths. The study also shown that there were no statistically significant differences between character strengths and depression according to: gender. There were no statistically significant differences between satisfaction of life except for the school satisfaction component, and there were differences in favor of females. The study concluded that character strengths is a necessity for a more fulfilled and less depressed adolescence.
