The Status-Quo of Faculty Members Professional Development at the Egyptian Universities and Suggestions of Development

Abstract

This research aims at identifying the status-quo of the professional development among the Egyptian universities’ faculty members and methods of development. The research adopted the descriptive approach utilizing a questionnaire as a data collection method. The entire study sample consisted of (615) faculty members. The participated universities were (Al-Azhar - Ain Shams - Alexandria - Assiut). The following statistical methods were adopted: frequencies, percentages, arithmetic mean, standard deviation, Cronbach's alpha and correlation coefficients by Pearson. The data collected were processed and analyzed using the (SPSS) software. The results indicated that the overall faculty perceptions and practices of faculty professional development programs in Egyptian universities were low. Moreover, the levels of (planning for professional development - identifying professional development needs - motivation for professional development) were of low degree while the levels of (organizing and implementing professional development programs - evaluating professional development programs) were of moderate degree. Finally, the approval degree concerning the suggestions concerning faculty professional development programs and activities was high.
