The Effectiveness of an Educational Program Based on Divergent Thinking Strategies in Developing Doctrinal Concepts and Logical Thinking Skills among Al-Azhar Secondary Stage Students

Abstract

The purpose of the current research was to develop doctrinal concepts and logical thinking skills among Al-Azhar secondary stage students through an educational program based on divergent thinking strategies. To attain the purpose of the research, the researchers utilized the quasi-experimental method. Instruments and materials of the research included:  a list of doctrinal concepts contained in the unit “Divine Attributes” from the book of Tawheed titled Tayseer Sharh Jawharat Al-Tawheed by Sheikh Ibrahim Al- Bijuri, prescribed for first-year Al-Azhar secondary students; a list of logical thinking skills; the educational program based on divergent thinking strategies; an achievement test to assess doctrinal concepts; and a logical thinking skills test. Participants of the research comprised 60 first-year Al-Azhar secondary students, divided into two groups: a control group (30 students) and an experimental group (30 students). They were drawn from two Al-Azhar secondary institutes: Mit Ghamr Secondary Institute for Boys (control group) and Tafhna Al-Ashraf Secondary Institute for Boys (experimental group), both affiliated with the Mit Ghamr Educational Administration in Dakahlia Governorate. The main results revealed the effectiveness of the educational program based on divergent thinking strategies in developing doctrinal concepts and logical thinking skills among students in the experimental group. In light of these results, the research revealed a number of recommendations and suggestions for further research.
