Abstract

The current study aimed to measure the effectiveness of a proposed unit, based on emerging health issues, in enhancing the health literacy of first-year students majoring in biological and geological sciences at the Faculty of Education, Al-Azhar University. A scale was developed to assess the students' level of health literacy. The experimental intervention consisted of the proposed unit addressing current health issues. A quasi-experimental design with one group (pre-test/post-test) was used. The sample comprised 30 students. The research instruments were administered to the sample both before and after the intervention. The results showed a statistically significant difference (p < 0.05) between the pre-test and post-test scores of the experimental group on the health literacy scale, with the post-test scores being higher. This indicates the effectiveness of the proposed unit in enhancing the health literacy of students majoring in biological and geological sciences at the Faculty of Education, Al-Azhar University. The study recommended several suggestions, including incorporating strategies that promote health literacy into teacher training programs, and encouraging curriculum developers to include topics that address emerging health issues and how to manage them, thus contributing to the development of students' health literacy.
