Gifted Student Support at Al-Haramain Saudi Academy in Jakarta: Current Status, Challenges, and Developmental Requirements: A Field Study

Abstract

This study aimed to examine the current status of gifted student support at Al-Haramain Saudi Academy in Jakarta, identify the challenges that hindered such support, and determine the requirements necessary for its development, as perceived by male and female teachers. The study adopted the descriptive (survey) method and employed a questionnaire as the primary research instrument. The findings revealed several key results, the most prominent of which were as follows: The most evident practices implemented for supporting gifted students at the Academy included the participation of gifted students in talent and innovation competitions organized by the Ministry of Education in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia; the Academy’s registration of gifted students in the National Program for Gifted Identification; and the use of standardized scientific tools for identifying gifted students. In contrast, the least evident practices included the availability of appropriate facilities for supporting gifted students, the provision of specialized evening programs for them, and the existence of a dedicated unit within the Academy responsible for gifted student care. The main challenges that impeded the support of gifted students at the Academy were the heavy teaching workload of the teachers and the limited availability of resources and facilities required for gifted education. The most important requirements identified for enhancing the support of gifted students included honouring gifted students during the Academy’s closing ceremony, providing them with both material and moral incentives, organizing a variety of internal competitions to help identify students’ talents, and offering training programs in the fields of giftedness and innovation tailored for the Academy’s teaching staff.
