Abstract

Due to the changing structure of families in modern society, families have become less able to fulfill their responsibilities towards the elderly, including providing care and attention. The modern family is often dominated by individualism, prioritizing self-interest above all else. Consequently, elderly parents are frequently isolated from their children, either by being placed in separate living arrangements or marginalized within the family home. Some children even consider their elderly parents a burden, abandoning them in nursing homes or, in extreme cases, leaving them homeless.
This study aimed to mediate and reconcile family conflicts between children and elderly parents residing in nursing homes. It utilized a professional model known as family mediation in case work. The study adopted an experimental approach using a "single-case research design" with pre- and post-intervention evaluations. The results showed that the professional intervention program based on family mediation effectively reduced family conflicts between children and their elderly parents in nursing homes.
