Abstract

The study aimed to investigate the economic values included in the Arabic language textbooks (Tawasul) by the Ministry of Education and Technical Education for the primary stage in the Arab Republic of Egypt. The study population and sample consisted of all approved textbooks for the academic year 2023/2024. The researchers developed a special classification for analyzing the content of these books as a tool for the study. It consisted of fourteen values: work mastery, consumption rationalization, respect for professional work, cooperation, optimal investment of resources, responsibility, appreciation of local products, appreciation of the value of knowledge, time appreciation, innovation, self-confidence, perseverance, social solidarity, and saving. The validity and reliability of the tool and the consistency of the analysis were verified. The total number of occurrences of the economic values included in the books under study was 790 repetitions. The study results revealed an imbalance in the presentation of values across grade levels, with some key values that reflect a trend towards sustainable development being diminished or absent. These values include respect for professional work, appreciation of local products, time management, responsibility, and saving. The value of cooperation was found to be the most frequently mentioned, while respect for professional work and saving were the least frequently mentioned. Regarding the inclusion of economic values in textbooks, the order was as follows: fifth grade, sixth grade, fourth grade, second grade, third grade, and first grade, respectively. The study recommended focusing on certain economic values that ranked in the middle or lower levels and incorporating economic values into the textbooks of the study sample in a systematic and balanced manner. It also suggested conducting similar studies to determine the depth and breadth of the presentation of these values.
