Abstract

This research primarily aimed to detect the relationship between life orientation and behavioral attitudes toward alternative medicine and mental health among multiple sclerosis (MS) patients. To this end, the researchers employed an integrative approach based on integration between the quantitative and qualitative methods, initially applying a comparative causal descriptive quantitative method. It was administered to a sample of MS patients from the neurology clinics of King Faisal Specialist Hospital in Riyadh and MS societies in Saudi Arabia. The research sample consisted of 215 patients aged between 19-65 years, including 73 males and 142 females. After extracting the overall quantitative results, the researcher applied the qualitative method to a sample of 11 patients aged between 22-61 years, including 6 males and 5 females, using semi-structured interviews. The researcher then analyzed and interpreted the research results on quantitative, qualitative and integrative bases. There was a positive statistically significant relationship at α = 0.01 between the scores of life orientation and behavioral attitudes toward alternative medicine among MS patients. There was a negative statistically significant relationship at α = 0.001 between the scores of life orientation and mental health among MS patients. The life orientation scores predicted the scores of attitudes toward alternative medicine among MS patients, with a 35.6% contribution to total variance. The regression variance F and T values were statistically significant at α = 0.001. The qualitative research findings were in agreement with the quantitative findings reached. Thus, the research findings, combined together, showed a relationship between life orientation & behavioral attitudes toward alternative medicine and mental health among MS patients. In light of the findings of this research, the researchers recommended preparing awareness and outreach programs in the media for MS patients and drawing the attention of community members to them and conducting counseling courses on life orientation and boosting positivity and optimism among MS patients.
