Abstract

The purpose of this study was to identify the level of psychological empowerment and social and cultural adaptation among a sample of international students at Al-Azhar University. The study explored the relationship between psychological empowerment and social cultural adaptation and identified the differences in psychological empowerment and social cultural adaptation in terms of the academic year variable. In addition, the study investigated the possibility of predicting social and cultural adaptation via psychological empowerment. Descriptive-correlational method was used to collect data. The study sample included (200) international students at the Faculty of Islamic Sciences for international students and the Faculty of Education for boys in Cairo, Al-Azhar University. The researchers administered the Psychological Empowerment Inventory (Spreitzer, 1995), prepared to Arabic by Abdel-Naeem Arafa & Abdel-Aziz Al-Fiqi. The researchers also administered Social and Cultural Adaptation Scale (prepared by the current researchers). Results showed that the level of psychological empowerment and social and cultural adaptation of the sample was medium. Moreover, there was a statistically significant positive correlation between psychological empowerment and social and cultural adaptation. Furthermore, there were statistically significant differences in psychological empowerment and social and cultural adaptation attributed to the school year variable in favor of higher academic levels, Finally, psychological empowerment predicted social and cultural adaptation among the sample of the study. The results were discussed and interpreted in terms of the theoretical framework and previous literature. The study concluded with some recommendations and future suggested research.
