The Status-quo of Cyberbullying among Special Education Students at Al-Balqa Applied University in Light of the Gender Variable

Abstract

This study aimed to reveal the degree of exposure of special education students at Al-BalqaAppliedUniversity to cyberbullying, the degree to which they practice it, its causes, and motives. The descriptive survey method was used, and to achieve the goal of the study, a questionnaire was built consisting of (39) items, and its validity and reliability were assured. The study sample consisted of (285) male and female students   in Special Education at IrbidGirlsCollege. The results of the study showed that the degree of exposure of special education students to cyber-bullying was medium, and the degree to which they practiced cyber-bullying was low. The most important, causes and motives of cyberbullying from the students’ point of view were the desire for self-assertion, suffering from depression, psychological disorders, weak religious faith, jealousy of others’ successes, love of control and the desire to control others. As the results showed that there were no statistically significant differences in the degree of exposure of special education students at Al-BalqaAppliedUniversity to cyber-bullying due to gender. There were statistically significant differences in the degree of cyber-bullying due to gender in favor of males. The results recommended increasing the awareness of university students by holding seminars, meetings and scientific lectures to confront the phenomenon of cyberbullying.
