Abstract

This study aimed at identifying differences in emotional sensitivity and self-esteem according to levels of behavioral regulation (low – moderate - high) and parental expectations (low – moderate - high). It also attempted to investigate the relationship between emotional sensitivity and self-esteem. The sample comprised (480) male and female students at Al-Azhar University in Cairo, within both Faculties of Education for boys and Human studies for girls. According to the administration of both scales of behavioral regulation and parental expectations (prepared by the researchers), the participants were assigned into three levels: lower quartile (low level), upper quartile (high level) and middle quartile that included all the rest. Both scales of emotional sensitivity (prepared by the researchers) and self-esteem (Hussein El-Dereiny et al.) were also administered. Results showed that those of high behavioral regulation levels were of high emotional sensitivity (negative emotional sensitivity – criticism sensitivity - suspicion-based sensitivity) and self-esteem levels compared to the other participants of low and moderate levels in this regard. Students with high parental expectations were more emotionally sensitive compared to those of moderate and low levels. There were no significant differences in self-esteem according to the three parental expectations levels. Additionally, there were significant negative relationship between emotional sensitivity and self-esteem, especially among those of moderate level of self-regulation and parental expectation.
