The Most Influential Patterns of Citizenship in the Stability and Progress of Society from the Viewpoint of the Citizenship Education Course Students at the Faculty of Education at Kuwait University

Abstract

The study aimed to identify the perceptions of Kuwaiti students who enrolled at citizenship course about the most important patterns of citizenship that lead to achieve the society's stability. Furthermore, the study focused on defining the students' justifications for choosing those patterns. The study employed a qualitative approach, and the data of the study were collected via an open-ended questionnaire to obtain in-depth information. The study instruments were administered to a sample consisting of 34 female student teachers who enrolled in a course of citizenship education at the first semester of the academic year (2020/2021). The results revealed that the female student teacher believed that moral citizenship is the most influential pattern of citizenship that enhance the stability of the society while the economic citizenship is the least influential. Such views are consistent with the Republican discourse of citizenship, which regards the virtue is most important to achieve a good citizenship. In the light of the results of the study, the researchers recommended strengthening the patterns of citizenship, especially moral citizenship, which has a role, as this study revealed, in consolidating national virtue. In addition, there is a need to study the status-quo of moral citizenship in the Kuwaiti curriculum and the school's environment from multiple sources including students, teachers, and decision-makers.
