Environmental awareness among young people and its impact on their social behavior A field study on a sample of university students

Abstract

The issue of the environment and its preservation has become one of the most important issues that has imposed on the global community the necessity of paying attention to it and addressing it on an ongoing basis, as human activities, whether individual or collective, have led to stress on the environment and our planet Earth. Since humans contribute significantly to environmental degradation and the clear destruction of biodiversity resulting from climate change and global warming, they must also provide achievable solutions to mitigate the risks and address the challenges that they have been the primary cause of. Therefore, environmental awareness was the way to spread knowledge, awareness and a deep understanding of the environmental challenges facing the planet Earth. Therefore, the research aimed to identify the levels of environmental awareness among young people, and to reveal the sources of environmental awareness among young people. The research also aimed to reveal the difference in the levels of environmental awareness among young people towards the environment according to the characteristics of the study sample. The research relied on the social survey method with a sample, and the use of the scale tool, and it was applied to a sample of Egyptian university students.
The study concluded that the youth have a high level of knowledge regarding the environment, and that their behavioral level regarding the environment was average, while the emotional level regarding the environment was high. It also revealed that social media is the primary source of environmental awareness among youth, and it was shown that it is necessary to integrate environmental awareness and how to preserve it into school curricula, and it is necessary to impose strict laws on those who violate the environmental system.
