Abstract

This study aimed to establish the Islamic foundations for caring for people with special needs by supporting them psychologically, educationally, socially, economically, and legislatively. The Prophetic Sunnah explicitly prohibits any form of mockery or harm towards them. The study highlights the unique approach adopted by the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), his companions, and the righteous predecessors in dealing with individuals from this group, regardless of the nature of their disabilities.
The researcher employed the inductive-analytical method. The study covered multiple themes and topics and concluded with several key findings, the most significant of which is that Islam preceded all previous civilizations and modern international systems in caring for people with special needs through divine guidance and Prophetic directives. Furthermore, when compared to their peers, students with disabilities, whether partial or complete—demonstrate exceptional abilities surpassing those of typical students, as exemplified by scholars such as Ibn Abbas, Ibn Umm Maktum, and ‘Itban ibn Malik. This trend continues in modern times, where individuals with special needs excel in various fields, as widely reported by different media outlets.
The study recommends establishing a dedicated center for people with special needs at Al-Azhar University, under the supervision of the Departments of Psychological Health and Psychology. These departments are best suited to provide education, guidance, and counseling to this group, ensuring equal opportunities and harnessing their constructive potential. Additionally, the study urges external institutions to incorporate people with special needs into all suitable professions and workplaces in alignment with their capabilities.
