A Program Based on Linguistic Activities to Develop Oral Communication Skills and Linguistic Sense Among Students of The Institute of Moderation and the Culture of Peace Who Are Non-Arabic Speakers

Abstract

         The purpose of the current research was to identify the effectiveness of a program based on linguistic activities in developing oral communication skills and linguistic sense among non-native Arabic speakers students at the Institute of Moderation and the Culture of Peace. To attain the purpose of the research, the researcher designed a list of oral communication skills, a list of the dimensions of the linguistic sense of oral communication skills, a cognitive test for the cognitive aspect of oral communication skills, a situational test for the performance aspect of oral communication skills, accompanied with a scoring rubric, a scale to assess the dimensions of the linguistic sense associated with oral communication skills, a personal interview and self-reflection form. The researcher also designed the proposed linguistic activities-based program as a study material, and the teacher's guide. To meet such an end, the mixed-method approach was adopted for the current study combining both quantitative and qualitative assessments together with the Quasi-experimental method with its pretest-posttest control/experimental groups design, which is based on manipulating the independent variable and measuring its effectiveness in the dependent variable. The research participants consisted of a group of (30) non-native Arabic speakers students at the Institute of Moderation and the Culture of Peace.  Results revealed that there was a statistically significant difference between the mean scores of the treatment group in the pre/post-administrations in oral communication and linguistic sense, favoring the post-administration. In addition, the qualitative results of the research also showed the students’ interest in the program and their desire to generalize the study through linguistic activities which indicates the effectiveness of the proposed program in developing oral communication skills and the linguistic sense associated with them among the research participants.
