Cultural shock and its relationship to Acdemic engagemen and cognitive flexibility among a sample of foreign students at Al-Azhar University

Abstract

          The current research goal is to identify the level of cultural shock among expatriate students, and to study the relationship between the cultural shock and both Acdemic engagemen  and cognitive flexibility for students at Al -Azhar University and verify the possibility of predicting the cultural shock of expatriate students through (Acdemic engagemen  and cognitive flexibility) and revealing the differences in Cultural shock according to the type (male - females) and the duration of residency (less than two years - more than two years) and in terms of language (Arabic speakers - non -speaking Arabic) among students arriving at Al -Azhar University and participated in the research (350) male and female students in the colleges of Al -Azhar University in Cairo For the academic year (2023-2024 AD), research tools consisted of (the scale of cultural shock and the scale of cognitive flexibility) from (the preparation of the researcher) and the Acdemic engagemen  scale prepared by Muhammad Jamal al-Din Zewail (2023 CE). The results resulted in a statistically low level in the cultural shock of expatriate students at Al-Azhar University and the existence of a statistically significant relationship between cultural shock, Acdemic engagemen  and psychological flexibility, and that cultural shock can be predicted through both (Acdemic engagemen - cognitive flexibility) among expatriate students At Al -Azhar University, as well as the presence of differences in cultural shock, according to the type (males - females) in favor of males and the different language (non -speaking in Arabic - speaking in Arabic) in favor of non -Arabic speakers, as there are no statistically significant differences in the cultural shock according to the period of residence (less than Two years - more than two years). The research was discussed and some proposed recommendations and research were made.
