The Level of Dogmatism in a Sample of High School Students in Jeddah and its Relation to Learning Styles

Abstract

The study aimed to identify the level of dogmatism among a sample of secondary school students, in addition to revealing the relationship between dogmatism and learning styles (cooperative, competitive, individual). It also aimed to identify the most common learning style among secondary school students in the city of Jeddah. The study sample consisted of (116) male and female students, 58 males and 58 females. The researcher followed the comparative descriptive approach, as is the Abu Nahia Doctrine Scale (1987) and the Al-Zaytoun Learning Styles Scale (2003) after codifying and modifying them to suit the Saudi environment The results of the study found that the level of dogmatism among secondary school students in Jeddah was average, and that there was a statistically significant relationship between dogmatism and the competitive learning style and the individual learning style. The competitive learning method is one of the most common educational methods among the sample members. In light of the results of the study, the researcher reached a number of recommendations directed to teachers, students, mentors, and advisors within educational institutions. The most prominent of which is working to create guidance programs that contribute to reducing the level of dogmatism among secondary school students.
