Abstract

The study aimed to identify the necessary values for protecting the identity of children and youth in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and ways to enhance them. This was achieved through an exploration of the determinants of identity for Saudi children and youth, highlighting the aspects that require protection and promotion, identifying threats to these aspects, and determining the means of safeguarding and promoting them. The study employed a descriptive-analytical methodology and utilized a questionnaire as its research instrument. The questionnaire was administered during the second half of the year 1444 AH (2023 CE) to some education experts who are members of the faculty in several Saudi universities, including both males and females. The total number of participants was 135, and 96 of them responded, representing a 71% response rate within the study's sample. The study found that the most prominent determinants of identity for Saudi children and youth are Islam, the Arabic language, national boundaries, moderation, original Arab culture, and values. Among the aspects requiring protection and promotion, the study identified the doctrinal aspect, the moral aspect, clothing, language, unity, and global role model. The most significant threats to identity included religious threats, cultural threats, social threats, security threats, and cyber-technological threats. The study also revealed the most effective means of protecting identity, such as distinguishing between authenticity, subordination, and imitation, promoting disciplined openness to other societies and cultures, teaching individuals critical thinking skills, empowering children and youth with cyber-security skills, and ensuring the inclusion of identity values in the general and higher education curricula. Among these recommendations, the inclusion of a specific curriculum for identity values in both general and higher education gained unanimous support from 50% of the study's sample, making it the most favored approach among those proposed. The study concluded by recommending that the Ministry of Education develop a specialized curriculum for identity values within the general and higher education curricula. This curriculum should balance between spiritual and material values and promote collaboration and integration among various community institutions and systems to reinforce the identity of Saudi children and youth. Additionally, the study emphasized the use of a scientific approach in decision-making processes.
