The effectiveness of a proposed marine science course in developing the Awareness of the marine environment among Biology Majors at the Faculty of Education Al-Azhar University

Abstract

The current research aimed to explore the effectiveness of a proposed marine sciences course considering the dimensions of sustainable development in developing awareness of the marine environment among a sample of (14) first year biology students at the Faculty of Education for Boys in Assiut, Al-Azhar University. The study utilized the mixed method research with the exploratory (sequential) design, which required collecting and analyzing qualitative data first, then collecting quantitative data to be a basis for developing the initial qualitative results and their interpretation. The proposed marine sciences course was administered to the experimental group. The quantitative research tool was a scale of marine environment awareness. The qualitative research results yielded a list of the dimensions of sustainable development, a list of topics for the proposed marine sciences course, and a list of the dimensions of awareness of the marine environment. The proposed marine sciences course was developed in the light of the dimensions of sustainable development. The quantitative research results revealed the effectiveness of the proposed marine sciences course in developing awareness of the marine environment among the experimental group students. The research recommended considering the interrelationship between the courses and the status quo of the students’ lives, as well as paying attention to the development of their emotional aspects represented in the awareness of the marine environment to achieve sustainable development with its environmental, social and economic dimensions. The research also recommended the need to use the list of dimensions of sustainable development, the list of topics for the proposed marine sciences course, and the list of dimensions of awareness of the marine environment in developing courses for biology students.
