Stress coping Styles and adjustment with university life among international students at Al-Azhar University "a significant predictive study"

Abstract

      The aim of the current research investigates the relationship between Stress coping Styles and adjustment with university life, and its overall possibility of predicting adjustment with university life through stress coping Styles among international students at Al-Azhar University, Additionally it investigates differences in both stress coping Styles and adjustment with university life in its dimensions according to gender (males / females), academic year (first / fourth), and cultural background (African / Asia). (100) international students at Al Azhar university (60 males - 40 females), participated in verifying the psychometric properties for the scales used, meanwhile, the final number of the participants consisted of (350) students, (215 male and female Africans - 135 Asians, males and females), their ages ranged between (19-28) years, with a mean of (21.13), and a standard deviation of (2.90). The scale of stress coping Styles and the scale of adjustment with university life-prepared by the researcher-were applied to them. Study results showed positive correlation between coping styles and adjustment to university life as well as predictability of university life adaptation dimensions and total score via stress coping styles among international students at AlAzhar University.  Religious coping and problem focused strategies predicted academic adjustment. Religious coping and logical analysis strategies predicted social adjustment. Positive self-appraisal predicted personal, emotional adjustment. Stress coping total score predicted goals achievement as well as adjustment to university life., on the other hand,  there were not any statistically significant in stress coping Styles due to gender, meanwhile, there  were statistically significant in stress coping Styles according to academic year, and there were no any statistically significant in stress coping Styles according to cultural background, Moreover, there were no statistically significant in the dimensions of adjustment with university life (academic, social, personal / emotional, and commitment to achieving goals) due to gender, while there were statistically significant in the dimensions of life adjustment. In addition, there were statistically significant in the dimensions of adjustment with university life that were mentioned in the cultural background variable. The results of the current research were discussed, and a set of recommendations and suggestions for future studies and research were presented.
