Climate Change Awareness in Social Studies Textbooks at the Preparatory Stage: An Analytical Study

Abstract

The current study aimed to reveal the extent to which the dimensions of climate change awareness are included in social studies textbooks at the preparatory stage, through analyzing the content of social studies textbooks in the three grades (first, second, and third) of the preparatory stage (the 2020/2021st edition). To fulfill the purpose of the study, the researcher utilized the descriptive analytical approach based on the content analysis method and a list of the dimensions of climate change awareness to be included in social studies books in the preparatory stage was prepared and redesigned as an analysis card to the content of these books. The research sample consisted of all topics of the social studies textbooks in the three grades of the preparatory stage during the academic year 2020/2021. The study introduced a list of the dimensions of climate change awareness to be included in social studies books in the preparatory stage. Results revealed that there was a weakness in including the dimensions of climate change awareness related to the concepts of climate change, its causes, consequences, how to confront it, and the trend towards climate change in social studies textbooks, especially in the second and third preparatory grades. In addition to the imbalance in the inclusion of the dimensions of climate change awareness in the content of social studies curricula in the preparatory stage. The research recommended reformulating the content of social studies books in the preparatory stage to include the dimensions of climate change awareness in line with the characteristics of the students and the nature of Egyptian society.
