Abstract

This study aimed to identify the level of awareness of the phenomenon of extremism and its relationship to irrational thoughts and the perceived self-concept among a sample of Qassim University students. The researchers used the descriptive analytical approach. The study sample consisted of (900 male and female students) who were chosen by the available method. To achieve the objectives of the study, the researchers designed three scales: (the scale of extremism, the scale of irrational thoughts, and the scale of the perceived self-concept). The results of the study showed a medium level of social extremism, and low level of intellectual extremism, and medium level of irrational thoughts. It also showed a high level of the perceived self-concept. Also, the results indicated positive, statistically significant correlation between social extremism and the scale of irrational ideas in all its dimensions and the total degree except for the dimension (seeking complete solutions). And there is a negative statistically significant correlation between the phenomenon of social extremism and the perceived self-concept scale. Also, there is a positive, statistically significant correlation between the intellectual extremism and the scale of irrational ideas, except for the dimension (seeking complete solutions). And there is a negative statistically significant correlation between intellectual extremism and the perceived self-concept scale, except for the dimension (dealing with events and situations). There are also statistically significant differences due to the effect of gender on the level of extremism in all its dimensions in favor of males in intellectual extremism, while it was in favor of females in social extremism. There are statistically significant differences due to the effect of gender on the scale of irrational thoughts in all dimensions except for the emotional impulsivity dimension. The results also indicated that there were no statistically significant differences due to the effect of gender on the perceived self-scale.
