Abstract

The objective of the current research aimed at identifying the effectiveness of a training program based on habits of mind in developing skills of Smart reading and mindfulness for the non-Arabic speakers gifted students. The sample of the research consisted of (14) gifted students from the second secondary stage of Al-Azhar students in Arpil’s Institute in Iraq. It included one experimental group that studies the Smart reading using a training program based on habits of mind. The instruments of the research include Smart reading skills test, a questionnaire to determine the training needs and mindfulness standard (prepared by researcher).  After verifying the validity and stability of the study tools, the researcher applied the research instruments on the sample of the study pre and post and revealed the results. The researcher found that there were statistically significant differences at (0.01) between the mean ranks scores of the students (participants in the current research) of Smart reading skills test as a whole and for each sub-skill in the pre and post administration of a training program in favor of the post administration. This indicates the effectiveness of a training program based on habits of mind in developing Smart reading skills. Results also revealed that there were statistically significant differences at (0.01) between the mean ranks scores of the students (participants in the current research) of mindfulness standard as a whole and for each sub-skill in the pre and post administration of a training program in favor of the post administration. The effect size was (0.46), which indicates the effectiveness of a training program. In light of the results of the research, the researcher concluded a number of recommendations, and suggested a set of further research.
