Modeling the multi-group structural equation in the relationship between neurotic perfectionism, self-confidence and self-handicapping among university students in light of some modified demographic variables

Abstract

The aim of the research is to test the validity of the structural model of the relationships between neurotic perfectionism as an independent variable, self-confidence as a mediating variable, age as a modified variable, and self-handicapping among university students. It also aims at examining the role of gender (male - female) and college type (theoretical - practical) as modified variables in the relationship between neurotic perfectionism, self-confidence and self-handicapping. The basic sample consisted of 601 Al-Azhar University students whose ages ranged between (18-24) years. The researchers used a number of scales they developed which included the Neurotic Perfectionism Scale, the Self-Confidence Scale, and the Self-handicapping Scale. The findings showed that there are good matching indicators between the proposed models and the data of the research sample.  There is a statistically significant positive direct effect of neurotic perfectionism in self-handicapping; however, there is no statistically significant effect of the interaction of neurotic perfectionism with age as a modified variable in self-handicapping and there is no effect of the age variable in self-handicapping. In addition, there is no effect of self-confidence in self-handicapping and there is no effect of neurotic perfectionism in self-confidence. The results showed the effect of gender (males - females) and the type of faculty (theoretical – practical), as modified variables, in the nature of the relationship between neurotic perfectionism and self-handicapping, and the effect of gender (females) and the type of college (theoretical) in the nature of the relationship between neurotic perfectionism and self-confidence. In addition, gender (males) has effect in the nature of the relationship between self-confidence and self-handicapping whereas there is no effect of the type of faculty (theoretical-practical) as a modified variable in the relationship between self-confidence and self-handicapping.
