Abstract

The present study aimed at examining the effectiveness of RAFT Strategy for developing The Functional Writing skills among non-native learners of Arabic. For achieving the study objective, a list of Functional Writing skills, required for the native learners of Arabic at the advanced level, has been identified. It consisted of 12 skills which were classified into two main levels of General skills of Functional, and Functional areas of writing. In the light of this list, a Functional Writing skills test for non-native learners of Arabic has been developed. It was administered as a pre-application on a sample of 18 male and female learners at Nile Education Centre (Cairo) for Teaching Arabic to Non-Native. The study result revealed that the learners' level was low in the Functional Writing skills. That was why a teaching manual has been developed. It included some Functional Writing topics for non-native learners. The sample was divided into two groups: Control and experimental. The latter studied the Functional Writing topics using RAFT Strategy. The test was administered as a post-application. The study findings showed that there were statistically significant differences between the mean scores of the experimental group and those of the control, in favour of the experimental. This finding indicated the effectiveness of RAFT Strategy for developing Functional Writing skills among non-native learners of Arabic at the advanced level.
