Spelling Errors among Preparatory Programs Students at Imam Mohammad ibn Saud Islamic University

Abstract

This study aimed to reveal the level of spelling ability and common spelling errors of students in preparatory programs at Imam Mohammad Ibn Saud Islamic University, and to reveal the differences of students’ level regarding their spelling abilities. To achieve the aims of the study, the descriptive survey method was used where the researcher created a test to measure spelling skills for students of preparatory programs. The test consisted of several sentences that include words with spelling skills to be applied, aiming to assess 30 different spelling skills. The study population consisted of 3,478 male students and 3,283 female students in the Deanship of Preparatory Programs at Al-Imam Muhammad Ibn Saud Islamic University. The study sample was 197 male students and 164 female students who were chosen randomly. The study identified a number of results, most notably are; the performance level of students in spelling skills reached an average level, with a percentage of (60.93%). The most common spelling errors in the study sample were in writing the Arabic letter ء)), spelling errors in writing (ة), deleting and adding some letters on the word. Also, the study also revealed statistically significant differences at the level (0.01) between male and female students the mean scores of the spelling test in favor of the female students, where the value of “T” reached (11.27), which is a statistically significant value at the level of (0.01).
