Islamic Studies Teachers’ Use of Infographics in their Teaching Practices: Current Status and Challenges

Abstract

Among the critiques of Islamic studies textbooks in Saudi Arabia is the use of complex Islamic terms and concepts that are not suitable to young students. Therefore, this quantitative study sought to explore Islamic studies teachers' perceptions on the current status and challenges of the adoption of infographics into daily teaching practice to explain religious terms and concepts. Islamic studies teachers at all stage levels at Afif province of Riyadh region responded to a survey developed by the authors. Results showed that most teachers see great potential of infographic facilitating the explanation of terms and concepts and making the learning experience fun and engaging. The study respondents indicated that the most challenges of the use of infographics in teaching practices includ: the lack of specialized training programs as well as the absence of incentives for teachers. In addition, data showed that teachers who completed 3 training sessions or more expressed a more positive perception of potential and considering challenges less than did teachers who had less or no training. The findings of the study suggest several improvements could be made to the teaching practices based on teachers' perceptions.
