Level of Smartphone Addiction and Risks among Adolescents (Male and Female) in High Schools in Jazan Region

Abstract

This study aimed to detect the degree of addiction of smartphone devices among adolescents and sought to identify the impact of each of the variables (gender and age). The researcher used the descriptive curriculum to conduct the study, and the sample of the study consisted of (207) students from high schools in public education in Jazan Region; they were randomly selected. The researcher used a questionnaire to collect information to assess the addiction of smartphones prepared by Ajami (2020) consisting of (33) paragraphs divided into six dimensions, in the second semester of 2020-2021. The results of the study indicated that there were statistically significant differences in smartphone addiction among adolescent students from high school in Jazan's education. The differences were in favor of male students in both "daily life disorder", "positive expectation" and "withdrawal" and "overuse". The results also confirmed the existence of risks and negative effects due to overuse as the results indicated differences in the students' answers in both "endurance" and the differences were in favor of the students, as the results showed differences in the students' answers in both "daily life disorder". The results indicated that there was a direct relationship among students' responses in "daily life disorder," "positive expectation," "withdrawal," "cyber-relationship", "overutilization", “endurance and low academic achievement” among students.
