Abstract

The study aimed to identify the components of citizenship involved in the civic education textbooks prescribed for secondary school students in Egypt by analyzing their content, using the descriptive - analytical approach. The researcher prepared a list of the components of citizenship, which divided into four areas: the component of identity and belonging to the homeland (10) items, the component of the rights of citizenship (12) items, the component of the duties of citizenship (13) items, and the component of societal and political participation (10) items. The results  showed the availability of the components of citizenship in the civic education textbooks at the secondary level, and their ranking was consecutively: societal and political participation (28.70%), duties of citizenship (25.52), identity and belonging to the homeland (23.31), and finally, the rights of citizenship (22.66). Most of the components of citizenship in the civic education textbooks at the secondary stage in general - in terms of the subcategories of content - were “equal opportunities for all citizens without discrimination among them”, “general knowledge of Egypt's constitution and its political system”, “the practice of volunteer work”. The results also revealed that there are statistically significant differences between the results of the analysis of the civic education textbooks of the components of citizenship, and that they are in favour of the textbook of the first secondary grade. The study presented a set of recommendations and suggested research.
