Abstract

The study mainly aimed to identify the level of compatibility of social bond indicators in Hirschi’s theory in social control with reduction of crime in the Jordanian society, and determine the nature of the correlation between social bond indicators in Hirschi’s theory (belief, attachment, involvement, and commitment) with crime reduction in Jordanian society. To achieve the research objectives, the study made use of the descriptive - analytical method, using a questionnaire instrument administered to the study sample consisting of (472) faculty members who were selected from three Jordanian government universities, namely: the University of Jordan, Yarmouk, and Mu'tah. For data analysis, the study used the descriptive and analytical statistics. The results of the study confirmed and supported the assumptions of Hirschi’s social bond theory in reducing crime in the Jordanian society. The results also showed that the general level of compatibility of Hirschi’s social bond indicators with reducing crime in Jordanian society came at a high level, with a mean of (3.793). The results also showed a positive and statistically significant correlation, with a level of significance (0.05), between the total score of attachment “affection”, involvement “participation”, commitment “compliance”, and belief “faith” indicators, and crime reduction in the Jordanian society. Based on the results of the study, a number of recommendations were proposed with an aim to reduce crime by enhancing the level of social bonds between individuals to increase their compliance, engagement, participation, attachment, involvement, and correlation to the prevailing values in Jordanian society.
