Abstract

This research aimed to identify the effect of problems-based learning strategy in acquiring the visual basic programming skills and their attitudes toward them by the female students of the first secondary stage. The research made use of the quasi-experimental method to assess the eefect of the independent variable (teaching strategy) on the dependent variables (visual basic programming skills and attitudes toward visual basic programming). The research sample consisted of (60) female students of the first secondary grade who were divided into two groups: one of them was an experimental group consisted of (30) female students, who were taught according to the problem-based learning strategy and the second one is a control group students who has been taught according to the usual method. The research instruments included the following: performance test of programming skills, observation checklist of test administration and a scale of attitudes toward the programming learning. The current research concluded with the following results: there are statistically significant differences at the significance level of (0.05 ≥ α) among the mean scores of experimental group female students and that of the control group in the pre-test of visual basic programming unit in favor of the experimental group. There are statistically significant differences at the significance level of (0.05 ≥ α) among the mean cores of the experimental group female students and that of the control group in the pre-test of attitudes towards visual basic programming learning in favor of the experimental group. Accordingly, the research proved that there is a positive effect of teaching via the problems-based learning strategy in acquiring the skills of visual basic programming for the female students of first secondary stage and on developing their attitudes toward visual programming learning.
