The Effectiveness of a Training Program Based on Mindfulness in Reducing the Symptoms of Borderline Personality Disorder among a Sample of University Students

Abstract

This research aimed at reducing the symptoms of borderline personality disorder among a sample of university students through preparing a training program in which mindfulness strategies and skills were employed as one of the dialectical behavior therapy strategies. The research also aimed at investigating the effectiveness of the program in reducing the symptoms of borderline personality disorder among the sample and identifying to what extent the program was effective after the follow-up period. The sample of the research consisted of (22) university students enrolled in the first year, Faculty of Education in Cairo, Al-Azhar University whose age ranged between (18) and (19) years, and were divided into two groups: experimental (11 students) and control (11 students). The researchers prepared and utilized the scale of borderline personality disorder symptoms, and the training program. The results revealed that there were statistically significant differences at (0.01) level between the ranks mean scores of the experimental group students in the pre and post-tests of the scale of borderline personality disorder symptoms. Furthermore, there were statistically significant differences at (0.01) level between the ranks mean scores of the experimental and control groups in the post-test of of the scale of borderline personality disorder symptoms. In addition, there were no statistically significant differences between the ranks mean scores of the experimental group students in the post and follow up-tests of the scale of borderline personality disorder symptoms.
