Abstract

The current research aims to explore the relationship between perceived symbolic violence and learned helplessness for a sample of (200) male and female university students from educational and medical education. Ali Hussen Ayed's Perceived Symbolic Violence (2016) and Eman Fawzy Shaheen's Learned Helplessness Scale (2016) were used. The results showed that there was a correlation between students’ mean scores on the perceived symbolic violence scale, the scale of helplessness, the total degree, and dimensions (failure, dependency), while there was no correlation between the students’ mean scores on the perceived symbolic violence scale and the dimension of negative/positive orientation, and there were differences on the perceived symbolic violence scale according to specialization. Nevertheless, there were no differences on the learned helplessness scale according to the variable of gender or specialization. Finally, the perceived symbolic violence contributed to predicting the learned helplessness of the research sample of university students.
