The Role of University in Meeting the Educational Needs of the Slum Areas Dwellers

Abstract

The present research aimed to identify the university’s role in meeting the educational needs of the residents of slum areas in Egypt, by examining the status-quo of the educational needs of slum area dwellers through conducting an exploratory study on some residents of slum areas, and then determining the status-quo of the university’s role through the procedures and practices provided in the educational aspect to the residents of these areas. The research used the descriptive approach in order to achieve its objectives and reached a set of future roles through which the university can meet the educational needs of the slum dwellers more effectively such as: Organizing educational missions for slum dwellers, holding literacy programs, and holding meetings with slum dwellers to train them in modern upbringing methods. The most important challenges facing Egyptian universities in meeting the needs of slum dwellers were the lack of budget for university education in general, especially in relation to community service, as well as the reluctance of some faculty members to participate in slum development programs. The research concluded by presenting some important requirements for the development the University role to meet the needs of slum dwellers.
